If you are heading out to visit the Grand Canyon and are looking for low cost or free sites to visit along the way, check out these options. With little to no cost, these opportunities can help you stretch your budget and ensure that you and your family get the most of your vacation dollar.
1. Visit the Grand Canyon Village
Known as one of the more popular entry points into the Grand Canyon, the Grand Canyon Village can be a tad overcrowded at times. That should come as no surprise, however, as it is home to a number of the best lookout points in the park as well as some of the top lodging options. Lodging within the village can often cost a pretty penny, however, it is worth it for proximity to the Canyon. El Tovar, which is located at the head of the Rim Trail on the canyon’s South Rim, offers some of the most beautiful Grand Canyon vistas at your door step.
2. Hike the North Rim
If you are the type of traveler who enjoys a rugged hike in an area that is not overrun by other tourists, this might be the spot for you. The North Rim has the reputation for being less crowded (even if only slightly) than its southern counterpart. Like most of the park, the peak flow of traffic in the area takes place during peak travel times of late spring and early fall. Unlike it’s the South Rim, however, there are not a lot of facilities in the North Rim, so it is unlikely that it will ever experience the same level tourist draw seen in the South Rim. What this means for you is that there is a bit more freedom and opportunity to explore.
3. Ride a Mule on the Bright Angel Trail
If you are in search of a unique experience at the Grand Canyon and a have a few days to explore, consider visiting the Bright Angel Trail on the back of a mule. This steep trail offers beautiful views as well as a unique and interesting journey. The six-mile long trail offers visitors an opportunity to explore Plateau Point by day or with an overnight camping option. Whichever option you chose, you are bound to have an eventful and enjoying experience.
